Defense Attorneys With Hands-on Experience in New Jersey

The legal team available to you at the Law Offices of Jonathan F. Marshall in Jersey City, N.J., was specifically assembled to take advantage of the vast experience of the criminal defense attorneys brought into the firm. Each of our seven attorneys has spent decades working as a prosecutor or a public defender in local courtrooms across New Jersey. We know New Jersey criminal law and how it is actually applied in court, case after case.

Our attorneys also know through experience that too many New Jersey residents face criminal charges without adequate legal representation. Too many people plead guilty or are found guilty of crimes in New Jersey and then suffer overly harsh sentences that could have been avoided. You do not have to let this happen to you.

At the Law Offices of Jonathan F. Marshall, we care deeply about every defendant’s Constitutional right to a strong legal defense, and the obligation of the prosecution to prove its case before a guilty verdict can be rendered. We make sure every prosecutor faces an uphill climb. We are known for creative and strategic approaches to criminal defense, and our firm has the resources to fully challenge every case we pursue. Contact us today about putting an experienced and aggressive team of Jersey City attorneys in your corner.

"I hired Jonathan and his firm to defend my son's criminal case. Other attorneys had painted a very negative picture about the likelihood of his going to jail for a long time. Jonathan clearly knew his way around the court system. It was very comforting to see how well respected and known he was to both the judge and prosecutor. "

Experienced Guides to N.J. Criminal Courts

Many residents of Jersey City, Bayonne, Union City, Hoboken or elsewhere in Hudson County, who turn to the Law Offices of Jonathan F. Marshall for help are dealing with the N.J. Courts system for the first time. They are understandably anxious and confused about a process that could ruin their finances and take away their freedom.

But what we want you to know is that with a proper defense like we provide, New Jersey laws and courts can be made to dispense justice. Prosecutors are obligated to seek guilty verdicts, but must be able to prove their cases. When they cannot, they know it — and so do we.

Because our attorneys have some 100 years of combined experience with New Jersey criminal law and courts, we know where a case is headed as well as the prosecution does. We also know where the law allows prosecutors to pursue lesser charges or lighter sentences in deference to the facts of the case or what’s right for a first-time offender or someone more in need of help than punishment.

More important, Jersey City prosecutors listen to our attorneys when we suggest alternatives to charges filed by police or maximum sentences provided but not required by law. They listen because they know us and have worked with us here in Jersey City or in the state’s other municipal and county courts.

As your defense attorneys, we will always work to obtain the most favorable outcome for you. We will keep you informed about what’s happening in your case, and the long-range considerations you should bear in mind as we decide together how to defend you from criminal charges. When appropriate, we will also advise you of the pros and cons of New Jersey’s diversionary programs, including Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI), Drug Court and Conditional Discharge, and whether a plea bargain may benefit you.

We Are Jersey City Defense Attorneys

Here in the shadow of New York City, the lawyers of the Law Offices of Jonathan F. Marshall serve residents of the vibrant and diverse Jersey City when they come up against the law. Our attorneys have the broad perspective developed from courtroom experience all across New Jersey, but also the local knowledge and connections required to ensure that the law serves justice for individuals charged by the state.

In New Jersey’s criminal process, “disorderly persons offenses” or “petty disorderly persons offenses” are minor crimes heard in municipal courts where the charge was filed. More serious “indicatable offenses” are heard in the local county Superior Court. Federal cases are heard by the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, which has courtrooms in Camden, Newark and Trenton.

Jersey City Courts

Municipal courts in New Jersey are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal offenses, municipal ordinance offenses, and other offenses. Serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft or assault, may start out as complaints filed in Jersey City Municipal Court but are transferred to the Hudson County Superior Court.
