Scotch Plains Municipal Court

The Scotch Plains Municipal Court has jurisdiction to rule on a criminal complaint, including marijuana and paraphernalia possession, traffic summons, or a DWI charge. In New Jersey, less serious offenses or misdemeanor charges are referred to as non-indictable charges which are decided in Municipal Court. The municipal court also hears all motor vehicle and traffic tickets. Examples of cases heard at the municipal level are, DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, driving without insurance, disorderly conduct, minor drug offenses (such as possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia), driving while suspended or with a revoked license, simple assault, certain theft offenses (i.e. shoplifting), criminal mischief, harassment, resisting arrest, and all municipal ordinance violations. A conviction for many of the aforementioned offenses will lead to a criminal record. This is particularly troublesome when dealing with crimes of moral turpitude, such as theft. Difficulties obtaining employment could result. It is therefore wise to consult with an experienced criminal defense lawyer. In this regard, our attorneys are available 24 hours a day to assist you.
